The exhibition “Portraits – Self-Portraits – Faces” at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz from 22 May to 31 July 2016 includes a total of 140 works on paper in an art-history genre that is one of the most steeped in tradition. The works on show are in the graphic techniques of lithography, etching, woodcut, pastel drawing, photography and silk-screen printing.

The pastel drawings by Bob Dylan (born in 1941) entitled “Face Value” were made in 2012 for the National Portrait Gallery in London and subsequently shown in Denmark and the United States. Now they can be seen for the first time in Germany, on loan from the Bob and Jenny Ramsey Collection. This group of works renders faces that reflect the far-reaching experiences and life circumstances of the portrayed.

The series is remarkable for the way Bob Dylan has foregone the strong colour contrasts of previous work cycles in preference for nuances in hue. By using colour to enhance the form, or as an underlying layer, rather than in a descriptive manner he avoids making unambiguous statements.  Consequently, the levels of the portrait and its coloured ground tend to merge. By depicting the subjects of his drawings in this way Bob Dylan gives these portraits both a formal and a surprising thematic twist. He draws a link across the centuries to the traditional pictorial type of the icon, thereby elevating people, who appear relatively calm in spite of being marked by the vicissitudes of their lives, to an iconic level. In his rendering, they are imbued with a special dignity. In addition to his unique abilities as a composer, song writer, singer and performer, this artist has also produced a substantial oeuvre in the field of fine art in recent years.

Together with the works by Bob Dylan, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz are also showing 80 prints by Max Beckmann (1884-1950), 15 lithographs and etchings by Lovis Corinth (1858–1925), photographs by Hugo Erfurth (1874–1948), Hans Günter Flieg (*1923), Duane Michals (*1932), Olaf Rauh (*1968), Benjamin Rinner (*1976), Thomas Ruff (*1958), Friedrich Seidenstücker (1882–1966) and Piet Zwart (1885–1977) as well as silk-screen prints and paintings by Andy Warhol (1928–1987).
